Reviewing a Legend - Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co, Escondido, California
Name: Arrogant Bastard Ale
Style: American Strong Ale
Origin: American

Pours amber with hints of red in the light; a nice off-white head lingers through the first sip but then falls into a thin off-white lace. The aroma hits with a mix of piney hops and caramel sweetness. A hint of something fruity lies just under the hops and sweet malt. Comes off bittersweet at first, then the woodsy hops lay into your tongue, and you are left with a piney residue and the suggestion of bitter grapefruit rind. Surprisingly smooth given the robust flavors. Nice body that suggests the strength of the beer, but doesn't come off as too heavy and overdone. This isn't a beer made to drink all night, but instead to respect and enjoy. Comes off like some of the stronger American Reds/Imperial Ambers, but with the complexity turned up an extra notch. This is a classic of new American brewing.
