Smuttynose Brewing Big Beer Series for 2012

It's that time of year when beer release schedules get released.

Here's Smuttynose Big Beer Series, which is more frequent in Chicago than it was when Smuttynose first appeared on OMG Beer!. Homunculus is a Belgian golden ale, Gravitation is a Quadrupel, and the rest are more apparent.

January- Baltic Porter
March- Really Old Brown Dog
May- Wheat Wine Ale
June/July- Homunculus
September- Scotch Ale
October- Stout (possibly Imperial, possibly something new)
December- Gravitation

January Round-up, Beervana 2011 #1

A very hectic January that led to a lot of beer notes and not a lot of beer reviews posted. Here's a round-up of favorites from the month, with some review notes.

Smuttynose IPA, 6.9% ABV - bitter yet refreshing citrusy hop bomb. There's a hint of pine as well, and some fruity esters in this cloudy unfiltered IPA. Currently my favorite IPA from the east coast. There's a hint of booziness I don't think a regular IPA should have.

Smuttynose Porter, 5.7% ABV - Smooth and creamy, leaning sweet for my kind of porter. Big suggestion of roasted coffee beans and chocolate. Very stout-like, with a hefty full body and a darker fruitiness. Sometimes with a beer like this I wonder what's the point of stouts.

Goose Island Dominique, 8.5%ABV - For those into an accidental Matilda experiment, think belgian style pale ale, already fruity and spicy, aged in bourbon barrels, and soured! This is a fantastic, slightly fuller body and sour version of Matilda that I prefer to the original.

Arcadia Loch Down Scotch Ale, 8.0% ABV - Before this brand got renamed, I really dug it as a solid example of the style. I can't tell you if it really got better since it was 6 months between trying the old and the new, but it has a cool new label, and is still a delicious example of the Scotch Ale/Wee Heavy style. I'd add to that style description that there's often a hint of dark fruit flavor as well from the heavy level of dark caramel malts and dark roasted grains.

Bell's Hopslam, 10.0% ABV - one of the most outstanding Imperial IPAs of the year. I don't know how much the recipe changes per year, but the honey this year is just the right amount of sweet balance to a fantastic beer. I had this the same day I had an Imperial IPA that will get highlighted in Beervana #2 and the two combined blew my mind (quite literally). The Alstrom Bros review on Beer Advocate says it well, give us more.

Flossmoor: Rail Splitter IPA and Intercontinental Pale Lager

New Beers for Chicagoland!

Three new barleywines. Three new brands with quite a few offerings.

Stone Old Guardian 2011 - loads of hops and malts, and worthy of aging in your "cellar"

Stone Old Guardian Belgo Barley Wine - the same malts and hops from the Old Guardian, but with belgian yeast. So far, I've loved all the belgo beers from Stone, where they've added belgian yeast to their already delicious recipes.

Smuttynose Barleywine (2nd available from their Big Beer Series, the first available in Chicago was a Baltic Porter I never got my hands on).

FIRESTONE-WALKER/Nectar Ales:
Firestone-Walker is here! And, along with the distribution of their beers comes distribution of Nectar Ales, a brewery that Firestone-Walker have owned since 2003. So far, I've seen the Firestone-Walker Double Jack Imperial IPA and the Barrel aged Porter on tap in Chicago. Quite a few others are available around town, and surely some in bottles. Nectar Ales introduced include their Hemp Ale, Red Nectar, and Nectar IPA.

CLOWN SHOES:
Brown Angel (strong hoppy Brown ale), Clementine (belgian style wit), Eagle Claw Fist (imperial amber), and Hoppy Feet (black IPA). Clown Shoes is just a year old, and has already made it into the Chicago market. I wonder if there's a best/worst brewery name of the year award?

Smuttynose Brewing comes to Chicagoland

Celebrate the inaugaural month of Smuttynose Brewing Company entering the Chicago market at Sheffield's in Lakeview. At least initially, the Portsmouth, New Hampshire brewery will be offering Chicagoland it's year-round beers. Fingers crossed this eventually expands to include their seasonal and Big Beer series.

Shoals Pale Ale
Old Brown Dog Ale
Finestkind IPA
Big A IPA
Star Island Single
Robust Porter

Expect some OMG Beer! reviews over the next month or two as we get our hands on these East Coast-based beers.
