New Holland Pilgrim's Dole Wheatwine
Name: Pilgrim's Dole
Brewery: New Holland Brewing Company
Style: Wheatwine
Brewed In: Holland, MI
Origin: USA
ABV: 11.4 %
Serving Glass: Pint
OMG Beer Rating: 7.9
Appearance: bubbly, cascading body, and a thick head, tannish, that leaves very impressive lacing. Extremely reddish body, the color you would associate with a red ale.
Aroma: nuts, caramel, toasted nuts, rum, golden raisins, a hint of spice, booze, lots of booze.
Taste: very much follows the aroma. touch more wheat and bread in the flavor, caramel sweetness accented by earthy nuts, bread, and a hint of spice (similar to the subtle clove notes in a hefeweizen).
Mouthfeel: viscous body. Smooth, which enhances the sweetness. Amazing how the lace is so structured, and the head so thick, yet the body stays smooth. Slightly boozy and cloying as it warms, but nothing you shouldn't expect from a beer in the barleywine/wheatwine/strong ale family. Aftertaste is nutty with a hint of mineral.
This beer almost makes the 8.0+ range for me. Honestly, if it just had a touch more bitterness to balance it out, I'd be even more about this beer. This is a must-try still, especially if you like big boozy dessert-like beers.
