New Glarus Fat Squirrel

Brewery: New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus, WI
Name: Fat Squirrel
Style: English Brown Ale
Origin: England

The Beer Judge Certification Program recognizes two different English Brown ales: a bitter, strong, northern English variety with more hops and a nutty malt flavor, and a southern/London brown ale that tends more toward caramel, and is less bitter and less strong, like sweeter version of English mild.

Fat Squirrel pays a respect to both styles of English, pouring a light brown color with a tan, lingering head, but little lacing. The aroma is nuts, a little hint of fruit, and caramel. Not though, an aroma that hits you over the head. The same goes for the flavor and body; this beer is lighter than you expected (because it is an english brown, not an american), subtle in flavor, and because of that extremely easy to drink. Earthy english hops bring just enough bitterness, to go with toffee and caramel and a definite nuttiness. Smooth almost creamy but light mouthfeel and the subtle flavors make this an easy beer to session. Six pack could go with a hearty meat and potatoes meal and go well with dessert too.
